While most gold coated jewelry is made via electroplating, gold filled jewelry is created through more complex process that retains the value of its gold content over time. The metals are permanently bound together using heat and pressure.

To qualify as a gold filled the piece must have a layer of gold that is 5% or 1/20th of the items total weight and is a minimum of 10 karat gold.
